Spot the rig??

Post by Twista UK » Mon Feb 12, 2018 12:35 pm

I thought it should be safe now to put this up seeing as the station is no longer active and no others are currently broadcasting from there. :rip
Can you see it?

No wonder they are no longer active just leaving the rig down the side of the chimney. It’s a gold mine for theives.

If you're stupid enough to climb out of the square hole below it and to the left, yeah.

Points noted in respect to the location of the rig, but at least it would stop council taking your rig as they wouldn't dare go there to retrieve it.

I used to use a big plastic beer keg to house rigs in wet conditions!

rig builders should try building an amp board in with a tracker in the middle as part of the circuit so the rig is worthless if it is stolen

It's not quite so trivial. The hardware alone adds significant cost that people are not willing to pay for unfortunately - let alone the development time involved.

Back in the 90s, a few of the rigs we supplied to London stations had a subtle but effective built-in ID system. We used to mix a tiny amount of one of the ultrasonic products from one of the PLL ICs into the modulation. It was inaudible, but quite obvious on a spectrum analyser if you looked at the mod. If a rig was stolen and re-tuned and reused, it was easy to prove where it had come from! One well-known 90s rig thief got a visit from a chapter of the Hells Angels after he stole and re-sold a couple of rigs - he never stole another rig when he realised that he preferred life with working legs....
