Tecsun 606 / True Flava's

Post by dave.parsons » Fri May 08, 2015 11:20 pm

I finally bought myself a Tecsun PL-606 and had a few scans in Medway... seriously impressed with True Flava's signal and choice of music on 94.2 tonight :-)

True Flava's is giving me 40dBu 27dB compared to Radio One (46dBu 30dB) ! A shame True Flava's is mono, but it does help explain the massive signal.

I've currently got in-ear headphones plugged into the Tecsun - seriously impressive little radio :-)

Yeah do extremely well on signal in Kent and their sound quality is spot on, i think there's only really 2 decent station in Essex and Kent both have proper consistency always on air.

The 606 is quite good. Pros are that it's smaller than the 310, comes with an aerial extender that screws onto the standard small whip, and it's a touch more sensitive. Cons are that it's not so great in the dark as the light doesn't stay on, plus I find that around 87.9 when there is no strong signal to override it, there is a whine on the audio that persists all the way up into the 100s. This makes it annoying listening to some of the weaker signals and when trying to track a signal to it's source. Do you find that with your 606? I might order another and see if I have the same issue with that. My tuning thumbwheel is going down the pan too.

Anybody tried a 310ET? It's the 310 with the ETM function added, not sure if it's got the same sensitivity, it may be more like the 606...

I've got both here, PL-310ET and PL-606ET. I heard talk of the 606 being slightly more sensitive than the 310 but there is honestly nothing to split them, reception quality is identical and they give very similar meter readings when on the same station. If anything, the 310 reads very slightly higher. Good sound quality and stereo separation with headphones. I'm using my 310 for testing audio boards at the moment.

Basically it's the same receiver under the hood, so the choice is down to how you're going to use it. As you say the PL310 is slightly bigger and allows direct frequency entry because it's got a numeric keypad. 310 takes 3 AA batteries, 606 has 2. The 310 takes longer to charge fully and presumably lasts longer but both last for ages. This easy tuning mode is OK, more useful for people who travel though. It just does temporary auto store from what I can tell.

Hope this helps.

I did notice a bit of noise on the 606 last night, but as I was charging it from my laptop at the time figured that was probably the noise. I checked again earlier and it seemed to be okay.

The 606 does LW aswell (you have to manually switch it on)... always makes me laugh tuning into 252 and finding out what's happening in Eire :-)

oh right, seems like a couple of the old stations are coming back (freek and d-vine) to name a couple, it would be good if the origional upfront 993 came back, was one of my favourites from back then.

Dave. I've been trying to get hold of you. If only you spent as much time on your own radio as you do talking about me on a forum your radio would be on by now. It took you 2 days to find me. You could of spend that time setting up and you would be on now?Why do you spend so much time worrying about what I'm doing? How many time have I and other people got to tell you that KAZ IS NOT INVOLVED. Is that clear?
Why don't you call me if there is a problem? Rather than pulling my aerial down and then chatting shit on a forum? It was only 3 weeks ago you was asking me to setup for you. Now your calling me dumb on a forum. Am i so dumb that you need my help setting up? Let's not discuss this over the Internet. You got my number call me don't be a hater.

Don't threaten me and my family and send stupid messages to my DJ's after a few beers and a few lines and then come on here acting like you've been hard done by.
