Starting out - which FM tx to buy?

Everything technical about radio can be discussed here, whether it's transmitting or receiving. Guides, charts, diagrams, etc. are all welcome.

Starting out - which FM tx to buy?

Post by fire » Sat Sep 03, 2016 11:20 pm

Hi all, have dabbled before with a 15W Chinese Ebay tx when I lived near London but never really got beyond "testing", probably just as well now I've read up about the bad emissions they put out!

Now I've moved elsewhere in the land, but want to start up again, had the following in mind, at least to start with:

Transmit from high up cell site, something like a 5W to 10W transmitter powered by a leisure battery that would be switched on over the weekend, then swapped for a freshly charged battery sometime during the week.

The question is, what transmitter to buy? I saved a load of links from Dutch sites, but they don't appear to have any further stock, I'm a bit dubious about some that I've seen on Ebay..... any help appreciated!

You are right to be concerned about a clean signal, Maybe someone on here can comment on the spectral purity, but PCS Electronics have quite a good offer on a 15w unit.

Why not trickle charge the battery from a solar panel so you don't have to swap batteries?

Floris - Your latest RM450 G6 video on youtube is really annoying to watch. The way you've edited the video is very choppy (maybe trying to make it like a commercial??) and it appears to jump from scene to scene abruptly.
Not having a dig at you but just some feedback for the future, meant with good intent.

Why do we never get to see the input port of your spectrum analyser?

Ohh, I could, just my camera field view which are to close, i don't have wide angle optic. But I guess on somes other video, this for the 650W video the camera is at longer distance so you can see the cable going to the analyser.

Thanks for the advice NOYB, their stuff looks good (not sure about the LCD though, gimmick?) although a little confusing that the top of the page says it's out of stock, but appears to be available anyway!

Actually I think I bought a log periodic from PCS years ago, and it was top quality.

UKNECKS, thanks for the link, but if this is your stuff, then prices would be handy!

its cool that their still on sale thought they stopped making them, not theres anything wrong with the newer ones, i’ve played around with quite alot of their stuff never had any problems, have to be the lowest for interference :D , output section is bullet proof, its made me dobious of buying else where i had interference problems with veronicas/nrgs often have to replace to output transistors with my experiments. With the 15w you’ll problaly need a fan and good enclosure else the output will reduce.

I'd rather build my own shit or buy the Dutch gear. Never had a problem with them.

Thanks - that's good news - I bought one, but apart from trying it out quickly to check it worked, I've not boxed it up or done any measurements - too busy! Even though I was only planning to run it at the low power 4w setting, I'd still bought a fan to cool the important bits. Belt & Braces as I was taught many years ago!
