A bit convoluted to implement for the average pirate, though - I would say most pirates outsource their electronics.
What I've done in the past is make a simple box with 2 phono inputs and 2 phono outputs. Inside is a T attenuator which reduces the signal to around half of what it originally was. The mixer output will sound crap through the studio speakers if redlined as a bit of a deterrent but it's less likely to cause digital clipping on the sound card which really sounds pants.

we have a blatant red line on on all channels of mixer as well that says stay under this line but always a couple that take the mick but that is a good idea i see what your saying

A great big chain of bright LEDs is easy to see and easy to understand. Most DJs have seen the LED indication on their cheap mixers, and probably have some idea of what it's about!

That's why my level meter also enforces levels by switching in additional attenuation in front of the limiter. If the clown driving the mixer is permanently up in the red, the levels are dropped back by 6dB. He loses all his dynamic range, and sounds quieter than his mates who get the levels right!
