hi all any Suggestions on a clean 15 to 30 watt RF amp for broadcasting ?. sites links or even diagrams willing to build it but would rather buy it as hands ant as sturdy as they use to be back in the day 1w drive in 15 to 30w out

Hi there. In these modern days MOSFET devices are on lead. So my suggestion would be RD30HVF. That is 30 W MOSFET on 12-15 V, with about 1 w input, so perfect match for your needs.

There are as many ways of linking as there are engineers. I've used Band I, Band III, Band IV, Band V, various SHF and microwave frequencies, 120kHz FM down the mains and even optical links using lasers!

It all depends on how far you need to go, what's in the way and how clandestine it needs to be.....

One station that I worked on in Eastern Europe uploaded their programmes in short digital bursts from their hidden studios. They could upload an hour of stereo programme in under 30 seconds from a small hand-held transmitter squirting the data from a USB stick! One of them just needed to go to within a kilometre of the output site to upload the programme.

That's pretty extreme. In this country, they usually go for the output site first. You'll "lose" the main rig a few times, then they'll get interested in raiding the studio if you persist. You'll also be more likely to get the unfriendly visit if your programming is overtly political or obscene, or if you're causing interference.

that is some proper 007 stuff lol.i done a station 12yrs back with no link and a poor twig running low wattage rig .workd for a year local was noticed and spoke about by local rag and stuff .norm banter like ther lots of interference ect.. probly the antenna lol.then dti came to studio the day we moved only thing up was the poorly made antenna.so wanna relaunch with better set up this time round was thinking a gorilla setup twig and rig in a tree .im in country flat area for miles .THANKS FOR REPLY'S

plenty on ebay of various powers up to around a kilowatt on fm but that is a little risky on that power but boy would you get out cover alot of kent and all london plus a great deal of Essex too

Been thinking about building a proper 1Kw rig. The transistors (some people call them chips) run on 110v.

Kiss / Energy had an ERP of 1.2 MW - that's 1.2 MILLION Watts. It broadcast from the top of a hill in Co. Monaghan, Eire, and was aimed into the north, towards Belfast and Londonderry. It was a cracking stereo signal in Glasgow and up the west coast of Scotland, too! The medium wave signal was also 40 kW into a good antenna, so that covered a huge area too!

That's what you call a real pirate station. They must have given the legals a proper run for their money! I remember reading about it being picked up Scotland.

Technically, it was a "Border Blaster", broadcasting from one country to another. The Mexican "X" stations were the first of these and back in the 1950s helped to form the style of pop radio that still prevails in much of the world. They were amazingly popular and partly gave Ronan O'Reilly the idea for Radio Caroline. The idea of broadcasting from a ship came from Radio Huaraki in New Zealand (1962), Radio Mercur in Denmark (1958) and Radio Veronica in the Netherlands (1960).

I think that I'll start another thread about DAB. There are exciting developments going on!

Apparently the Mexicans used to float their TV and radio aerials really high using helium balloons to reach into the US

I've used kites and helium balloons to put up temporary medium wave aerials. If there's little wind, it can really work well.

Helium's a strange one. It shouldn't be as cheap as it is - far too rare!

That's the same guy, wearing the same jumper as 1:42. In fact, 6:48 is a recycled clip which also appears at 1:40.
