Tuning an RF amplifier

Hello all!
Ive built many RF amplifiers over the years and most have worked well without blowing up!!
But the more i get to know them? it raises more questions??
For example! with a 50w amplifier the temperature and current can vary considerably whilst still maintaining 50w depending on tuning?
NRG did give a tuning proceedure on thier amplifiers but i cant find it no more??
it involved monitoring temperature, current and SWR??
does anyone have any tips on getting the optimum efficiency whilst tuning??
