Re: horizon radio 1985
He went to Portugal to run a station down there. The story goes that he ran up some huge debts and then disappeared.
I last saw him in the Walworth Road some time around 2000 when I was with two friends (one of whom had been on Horizon), but he didn't want to be bothered with talking to us.

Thanks for that even though it's taken 6 months for someone to reply. I think Chris Stewart totally gave up on the radio around 1990

After the license yes but I think horizon was the main pioneer and it was shame they didn't stick around longer

Re: horizon radio 1985
Nope - ten years earlier, the real pioneer was Radio Invicta - "the sound of midnight soul". They used to do a couple of hours on a couple of nights each week. Later, they became a Sunday station on 92.4MHz, usually in stereo.
In those days, a good aerial up a 23-storey block with 80 - 100 Watts would cover most of London, because there were far fewer stations, and the noise floor was much lower. We didn't have all the interference sources that do so much to wreck radio these days!

I knew about invicta but the owner closed it when Jfm and horizon went 24 hours so they weren't even running when the first licenses were advertised

Re: horizon radio 1985
Bob Tomalski - the guy who ran Invicta - voluntarily closed the station when the first tranche of licences were advertised. Most of his DJs went to JFM or Solar. When the licence stitch-up became obvious, Bob re-started Invicta for about a year. Then the Law change happened, and he went legit, working for several stations and making adverts.
Sadly, he died in the late 90s (as I recall).

Wonderful story you tell here, you must have gone to the school of imagination. He went to Portugal, he has never been to Portugal, so that one is a lie and in the Walworth Road in 2000, must have been a ghost try http:/horizonradiolondon.com for the truthAlbert H wrote: ↑Tue Apr 05, 2016 9:38 pm He went to Portugal to run a station down there. Seems the main man is back with a show on Chocolate Radio every weekend.
Not sure how long he’s been on this station but after reading the HRL website I done some digging and found him
