Overview of Pirate Radio Shows & UK Community Organizing Talk Shows

TL;DR: Looking for names of interesting community organizing radio shows in the UK and Internationally.

Sooo long explanation, I wrote 2 blog posts, one on my 'Top 25 Anarchist/Socialist Podcasts & Radio Programs' and one on 'Call in Talk Shows' for campaign advocacy. Also 'Campaign Media Analytics' for working out what fan communities are congregating around what political content.

Now would like to write 2 blog posts, one on 'UK Community Organizing Talk Shows' for figuring out how radio is shaping local and national political conversations in my country and 'My Top 25 Anarchist/Socialist Radio Stations' for what I would like to listen to traveling internationally and learning about other campaign struggles.

Finally part of what I feel I need to do to complete the above is get a better grasp of / make a page on an 'Overview of Pirate Radio Shows'.

Same again, if anyone has any ideas or could forward this onto anyone who could help it'd be really appreciated. Any information at all on public stations/shows or where to look for them would really help with writing these 3 or 4 articles. Would just like to get more engaged myself and help other people get interested in radical community/diy radio.

It is what it is, just a big list in the process of writing. Not expecting anyone to marvel in awe. I was posting in it's half finished form in hope of getting feedback, like names of pirate radio stations and crew's who've been influential in campaigns or talk radio hosts that authentically capture the mood at key events in communities.

I just know of a pirate radio group who relayed police movements during eviction resistance of the ZAD in Nantes, France. And a few anarchist pirate radio projects in Greece, there was one guy involved from there who posted here, but probs long since stopped checking the site.

And yeah this thread listing all the pirate radio programs I know of, while I was researching which ones did political talk. Transmission Zero are or were attempting to keep an up to date list which I took the UK ones from. Someone can mention if their site looks out of date or start their own on a new thread.

but there was Radio freeway 6262khz Shortwave in 1992 who had political talk by what sounded like teens. it didn't last long

Sure I know it's a hobbyist activity where that's it's main use, just didn't know the AM frequency, the guy who logged those ones says they are music/talk shows. Radio Patapoe is the only FM one I know from there. This site lists a few more that are local music shows that were picked up from a far.

I can correct some info on Radio Študent on 89.3. This is not from Serbia but from Ljubljana in Slovenia. I have it saved as a favourite on my Squeezebox Touch as they have some very interesting music programming, particularly of the more techno and electronic variety.

I can correct some info on Radio Študent on 89.3. This is not from Serbia but from Ljubljana in Slovenia. I have it saved as a favourite on my Squeezebox Touch as they have some very interesting music programming, particularly of the more techno and electronic variety.

Ayy thank you! Yeah I got really into Anima Sound System when I was a kid, they're a funny acid jazz electric band from Hungary. Interesting roots, growing out of the tail end of the soviet union, same with Izrael band in Poland playing a role in Solidarity pirate radio.

How are you finding your Squeezebox? I've been looking for a portable radio with similar functions. But one that doubles as an mp3 player, with large storage and long battery life. I came across a cube thing searching a while ago, but not been able to find it again.

I've found the Squeezebox to be the most flexible unit on the whole due to the excellent open-source nature of LMS. There's the superb iPlyer plugin from bpa which allows access to the high quality streams of all BBC live and archived content, as well as a plugin to enable HLS streams to be played. I have LMS on a home network set up on a Raspberry Pi. I needed some help setting it up initially but I'm finding it easier now.

As for weird and radical radio, you should try WFMU from the NYC/New Jersey area and KFJC from the San Francisco Bay area.

I had intended to write "those Dutch pirate pirate stations aren't what you're looking for"
in 27 years i've never heard any political discussion, just barrel organ music, Idents, swapping reception reports with other stations etc
but if you've heard specific info on the stations you listed then i happily bow to that

I suspect the Russian pirate stations in the 2000-3500khz range discuss politics but i've never managed to get a station ident

i can't remember if you have have Radio Radicale in Italy on your list but they would qualify, they are 100% socialist politics all the time they're a national network with hundreds (thousands?) of transmitters

there used to be Voice of Free Britain on 62xx in 1992 ish
i never heard them but my station got a reception report for one of our shows saying "that was wierd but not as wierd as Voice of Free Britain!"

the pirate stations with community px in Birmingham seem to have gone, the ones i can hear from home now are just music, sometimes a religious service on sunday morning from a West Indian church



i wonder if any of the Dutch Microbroadcasters are political?
i'll find webstreams and report back
