Compressor/Limiter
Can anyone help with stereo tools. I’m constantly fighting with the audio to keep it at a constant level, but one track can be very loud and another very low. Iv tried the bs124 or whatever Fm limiter but it just sounds so unatural. Is there a setting to pull up low audio but very slowly ?

Re: Compressor/Limiter
Check the AGC settings, sounds like the threshold is too low.

Re: Compressor/Limiter
There are lots of built-in settings in Stereotool. Might be worth starting by trying these and then modifying them to get the sound you want.

Reason some sounds are very low is when songs are recorded on cd, the recording is lower than the original is the reason why it's lower.XXL wrote:Can anyone help with stereo tools. It’s taken me about 10 years to figure out all of the settings.
Let me know and I’ll send you a sts file that’ll make your station louder than radio 1

Re: Compressor/Limiter
Here ya go. You might need to turn a few things down. It's a really aggressive preset.

I still prefer Breakaway Broadcast (which also has stereo and RDS encoding)

Hello XXL
Forgive me if this sounds condescending, I am not at all questioning you ability.
An important thing to note is that a Compressor, Hardware or software can only do so much.
Most of my digital media is recorded in realtime from vinyl singles and each one is obviously different.
Getting the headroom correct without clipping is an absolute pain in ass!! But it has to be done!
Good luck!

Re: Compressor/Limiter
Its not all about loudness. Squashed, Brick walled music actually makes me tune out. Its nasty. Slight compression to make it sound "Fat" is nice but not brick walled. It needs dynamic, but with volume control for audio that just stays low.
it needs to reach a target volume for audio that just isnt loud enough, otherwise you'll end up with low mod.

Re: Compressor/Limiter
I totally agree. When I look at the wave-forms of some of the latest 'drum and bass' tracks (wank jump up tracks) it's clear that they have smashed the track with compression. Everything is clipped and there are no dynamics!!XXL wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 6:16 pmIts not all about loudness. Squashed, Brick walled music actually makes me tune out. Its nasty. BBP is good as well. I’d say there’s a 50% divide on the forum as to who uses BBP or ST.

Just remembered Omnia also have their own software which I think was a collaboration with one of the Dutch guys.
I couldn’t get on with it myself but I’ve heard good things about the micro-mpx software which allows you to send a proper 192khz multiplex down a lowish bandwidth data connection.

@Bton-FM
Tbf, the latest jump up drum and bass isn’t even music anymore. It’s
just loads of noises over a drum beat.

Re: Compressor/Limiter
Whoa! I get so much clipping on that, that it hurts. So much use of the Natural Dynamics too.
Try this one... https://gofile.io/d/0OeCUN
It will get you close to 11 dBr for most content. It comes with a health warning though, it's very fatiguing!

Re: Compressor/Limiter
Just to confirm XXL?
Your problem is not with the artists mastering process of tracks? Its consistency of overall volume levelling?
If you are dealing with just playlists? I suggest that you put in the work previously to ensure tracks are level
before broadcast.
If you are 'Going live' with unpredictable tracks? A part of a DJs duties is to trim track gain during 'Cueing' (Thats why most mixers have preview VU meters) The compressor will save you from any slight mistakes.
Either way? A bit of preparation can make the processing so much easier!

Re: Compressor/Limiter
Just to add
With regards to ST which i have only used briefly? I suspect that there is no 'Magic Button' to solve all your problems.
As Maximus wrote "It took 10 yrs to get it right" What may be right for him? May not be right for you!
I would be confident to bet that if you searched for perfect sound? You would get no definitive result!
It does not exist!
If you can provide listeners with quality music as the artist intended, You are doing something right!

Re: Compressor/Limiter
Well said Sinus. Set your levels for each track as you cue up and make minor adjustments as you broadcast. Compression will save you from the odd overload but wont correct massive variances in levels.
