This old NRG limiter is quite good, but getting reliable results - with low distortion - can be difficult, especially if you're unsure of the parameters of your FETs.

I prefer other designs nowadays - good quality op-amps and transconductance amps make limiters easier these days. My early experiments with transconductance amplifiers were disappointing because of the poor noise and distortion specification of these ICs. However, I decided to try another configuration, using a high quality dual op-amp (NE5532 or LM833) and a dual transconductance amp (LM13600 or LM13700), using the transconductance amp for variable negative feedback around the op-amp. The results were very good.

I designed three or four single-band stereo limiters (and compressors) using this technique, and even the simplest of them could be configured for fast, low distortion limiting quite easily.
