I've got both here, PL-310ET and PL-606ET. I heard talk of the 606 being slightly more sensitive than the 310 but there is honestly nothing to split them, reception quality is identical and they give very similar meter readings when on the same station. If anything, the 310 reads very slightly higher. Good sound quality and stereo separation with headphones. I'm using my 310 for testing audio boards at the moment.
Basically it's the same receiver under the hood, so the choice is down to how you're going to use it. As you say the PL310 is slightly bigger and allows direct frequency entry because it's got a numeric keypad. 310 takes 3 AA batteries, 606 has 2. The 310 takes longer to charge fully and presumably lasts longer but both last for ages. This easy tuning mode is OK, more useful for people who travel though. It just does temporary auto store from what I can tell.
Hope this helps.
